The premiere of Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took place at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday (September 8), and during the documentary E Street bandmember Patti Scialfa opens up about her recent cancer struggle. The 71-year-old Scialfa shares in the film about being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, back in 2018. The cancer diagnosis and the treatment that followed resulted in Scialfa significantly scaling back her public appearances with her husband, Bruce Springsteen, and her live performances with the band over the past few years.
“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” Scialfa says in the documentary. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.” Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is set to premiere on the streaming services Hulu and Disney+ on October 25.
