NATIONAL HEADLINES:

RUSSIA PROPOSES SYRIA GIVE UP CHEMICAL WEAPONS

In an attempt to avoid a U.S. military attack, Russia proposed yesterday that Syria hand over its chemical weapons to international control. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said he had put forth the idea to Syria and expected “a quick and, I hope, a positive answer.” Syria publicly welcomed the idea. The White House reacted with skepticism, but said they would gladly accept a turnover of Syria’s chemical weapons. Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said it would be “an important step” if President Bashar Assad gave up control of his country’s chemical stockpile. She also called it “a fluid situation.” PresidentBarack Obama will address the nation tonight to make his case for a limited military attack on Syria, in response to the regime’s use of chemical weapons on its citizens. But gaining support for this plan from both Congress and the international community is proving tough.

ZIMMERMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER DOMESTIC DISPUTE

George Zimmerman was taken into custody yesterday, following a domestic dispute involving a gun. Police said the dispute involved Zimmerman’s wife, Shellie, and father-in-law, Colin Morgan. Shellie had recently announced plans to divorce. Her attorney said Zimmerman pulled a knife on her yesterday after she discovered a firearm in the house they shared in Lake Mary, Florida. He then allegedly pulled a gun on her and her father after a verbal altercation escalated. Zimmerman is being held by police but has yet to be charged. Back in July, the 29-year-old was acquitted of the murder of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

STUDY: GRAPHIC ANTI-SMOKING ADS CAUSED 100,000 TO QUIT

According to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the graphic “Tips From Former Smokers” ad campaign helped 100,000 Americans quit smoking. The ad campaign was the CDC's first national advertising effort when it kicked off in March 2012. It cost $54 million and lasted three months, encompassing billboards and print, radio and television ads. "This study shows that we save a year of life for less than $200. That makes it one of the most cost-effective prevention efforts," Dr. Tim McAfee, director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health, said in a statement. The ads included a public service announcement showing a cancer survivor named Terrie putting on her wig and voice box to get ready for the day. The commercials also included one about a 40-year-old named Bill who lost a leg, vision in one eye and use of his kidneys from smoking, and Jamason, a 16-year-old who was hospitalized for asthma after being exposed to secondhand smoke.

MAN WHO CONFESSED TO DRUNK DRIVING DEATH ON YOUTUBE GETS INDICTED

A 22-year-old man was indicted by an Ohio grand jury yesterday after confessing to a murder on YouTube. In a video uploaded to the site on September 3, Matthew Cordle admitted to causing the death of 61-year-old Navy vet Vincent Canzani while driving drunk on June 22. He was indicted for one count of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He’s expected to turn himself in and go before a judge today. Cordle was found injured at the scene of the accident and brought to the hospital, where his blood-alcohol measured 0.19. In the YouTube clip, Cordle explained that he had consulted with "high powered attorneys" who said that they could help get his blood test thrown out, but Cordle said he wants to take responsibility for Canzani's death. He said he had been out drinking with friends when he got into his truck and entered the highway headed in the wrong direction. He said he was "just trying to have a good time, but lost control,” and he begged people not to drink and drive.

NYAD TO MEET WITH SKEPTICAL SWIMMERS

Long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad is planning to meet with fellow swimmers who have expressed doubts about her 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. Members of the marathon swimming community have been debating whether the 64-year-old got into or held onto the boat that was accompanying her on her journey. They say she could not have picked up as much speed as she says she did from the Gulf Stream current. But Nyad’s team said yesterday she is willing to meet with the skeptical swimmers to clear up any questions they may have. "Diana is proud of what she and her team accomplished last week, and she is committed to complete transparency," one of her spokespeople said. On September 2, after roughly 53 hours in the water, Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.

When asked if she was okay, Remini replied, “It’s hard. We have lost friends that can no longer talk to us.” She added, “And these are friends that we’ve had for dozens of years, but I have great friends, other friends that are not in the Church, that have stood by us, and our family is stronger, we’re together, and that’s all I could ask for.”

Sharon Osbourne admitted on The Talk yesterday that she once slept with Jay Leno.  Sharon made the revelation as part of the show’s weeklong “Big Secret” segment.  “It's not like it's a dirty little secret," she said. "When I was 25, I just moved to America. I had met my husband [Ozzy], but we weren't together. We were just friends."  Sharon said she and a friend went to see Leno at a comedy club, and she told the buddy she thought Leno was “very nice, very funny.” The duo then began prank calling Leno, and "He liked my voice. “One thing led to another," she continued. "He came to my house and met me and then we had a little fling. The fling was more fling for me and not fling enough for him."  Sharon admitted Leno was a good kisser, but said she couldn’t remember what the sex was like because “it was so long ago.”

BULLOCK DIDN’T FEEL DESERVING OF OSCAR

Sandra Bullock is getting rave reviews for her new movie Gravity, and may well be in the running for her second Oscar, but the actress is still amazed she even got her first one. "Most people have that out-of-body experience when they win the Oscar," said Bullock during a Toronto Film Festival Q&A for Gravity. "I had a little newborn at home. So my body was already out of itself. And I think it was the universe's way of humbling me and saying, 'You know what's important? The acid reflux vomit that's happening right now.'” Bullock, who won for The Blind Side, added “(I) didn’t feel worthy when I got it, so I felt like, OK, I’m going to spend the rest of my life hopefully earning it, but having a really good time in the process as well.” Gravity opens October 4th.

HUDGENS LAUGHS OFF COCAINE RUMORS

Vanessa Hudgens tells Marie Claire she was amused when the media claimed she was caught doing coke at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival earlier this year. “I couldn’t do anything but laugh,” she said. “It’s amazing how people like to create something out of absolutely nothing. I am human like everyone else. I am aware that there are people who look up to me. When mistakes are made, they aren’t intentional, and I constantly push myself to be a better person.” But such false stories, as well as her naked photo scandal, have caused Vanessa to be a little less open about her life. “It’s one thing to have a chat with someone, it’s another to have them know your deepest, darkest secrets,” she says. “Just because people enjoy watching you in films doesn’t mean they have to know everything about your entire life.”

HOOK SAYS JOY DIVISION, NEW ORDER OUTTAKES BEING HELD “RANSOM”

The chances of Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook wrestling back possession of recently discovered master tapes and studio outtakes of both those important bands rests on how much (or little) the person who found them is willing to accept for their safe return. Hook told The Hollywood Reporter, “There is no happy ending. This cache of Joy Division had been unearthed by this wonderful knight in shining armor. Unfortunately, she’s now holding them ransom.” The she in question is Julia Adamson, the former record executive, sound engineer and personal assistant to the late producer Martin Hannet.
