A gunman strapped with explosives entered the Discovery Channel's headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland yesterday taking three hostages before being shot and killed by police. The suspect, identified as James J. Lee, was a longtime protester at the building who had been arrested for disorderly conduct in 2008. In an online manifesto, the 43-year-old detailed his radical environmental beliefs. He wrote that humans are destroying the planet and demanded that Discovery change their programming in order to warn people to change their ways. He also said that it is of utmost importance to save the animals. "The humans? The planet does not need humans,” the manifesto read. SWAT officers said they shot at Lee because they believed the hostages were in danger. All of the hostages made it out safely. Earlier police had evacuated part of the Discovery Communications building, including the day care center.

 

 

 

 

 

A hurricane warning was issued yesterday for most of North Carolina's coast and over 30,000 people were ordered to evacuate. Hurricane Earl turned into a Category 4 storm last night, packing winds of 135 mph. The National Hurricane Center also extended a hurricane watch into Virginia and up to Cape Henlopen, Delaware. Tourists on the North Carolina islands of Ocracoke and Hatteras were ordered to leave. The 800 or so permanent residents of Ocracoke Island were told they did not have to go, but officials urged them to follow visitors and head for the mainland. The smallest change in direction could drastically alter Earl's effect on the East coast. If the storm's eye makes landfall on the extreme eastern tip of North Carolina late today or early tomorrow, hurricane-force winds could also reach New York's Long Island and Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

 

 

 

 

 

After four weeks trapped underground, the 33 Chilean miners are hanging in there. Their well-being is authorities' top priority as crews began drilling this week in what will likely be a months-long effort to free the men. So far the miners are in good spirits, and included wine and cigarettes on a wish-list of items to be sent down through a borehole to them. However, NASA doctors said yesterday that for their own safety, the miners will not be receiving alcohol or cigarettes while underground. Health officials did send them nicotine patches and gum. They also sent down meat and rice - the miners' first plates of hot food since becoming trapped on August 5th. In addition, rescue workers have been pumping down compressed, cool air periodically to keep the tiny shelter fresh.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Michael Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones open up to People magazine about the actor's battle with stage four throat cancer. Douglas announced on August 16th that doctors found a tumor in his throat, and has since begun radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Douglas said he had been feeling pain for months, before doctors finally realized it was cancer. "It wasn't a huge shock. I knew something was up. He knew something was up," said Zeta-Jones. She tells the magazine that she's upset at how long it took to diagnose her husband's disease. "It makes me furious they didn't detect it earlier," she said. "He sought every option and nothing was found." According to Zeta-Jones, "the hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired," adding, "I know maybe I should be stronger, but emotionally I just don't want to see that." Douglas says he is optimistic about his prognosis. "I'm treating this as a curable disease," he said. "It's a fight. I'll beat this." 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Paris Hilton is going to have to find a new place to hang out in Las Vegas. A spokesperson for the Wynn casinos announced yesterday that following her arrest last week for cocaine possession, Paris has been banned from their properties on the Las Vegas strip, The Wynn and Encore. In addition, Paris' boyfriend Cy Waits, who was arrested  on charges of driving under the influence, has been fired as nightclub manager of the Tryst Nightclub at Wynn and XS The Nightclub at Encore. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Despite their 15 year age difference, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore always seemed like a perfect couple, but now comes word that Ashton may be stepping out on his wife. According to Star magazine, 32-year-old Ashton was caught kissing and groping a young blonde at Italian restaurant Madeo in L.A. "Ashton had this gorgeous girl pinned against the wall, and he was totally making out with her," said a source who passed the pair on the way to the bathroom. "I was shocked to see him sucking face with a girl who obviously wasn't Demi."  Not only is Kutcher’s rep denying the claim, he took to Twitter himself to address the story. "I think Star magazine calling me a 'cheater' qualifies as defamation of character. I hope my lawyer agrees," tweeted Kutcher. "STAR magazine — you don't get to stand behind 'freedom of the press' when you are writing fiction," he added. Whether Demi has heard the tabloid rumor isn't known, but judging by her latest Twitter pictures she doesn't look too upset about it. The 47-year-old actress posted several shots of herself in a tiny bikini yesterday. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jon Gosselin's ex-girlfriend Hailey Glassman tells Radaronline that the father of eight once tried to extort money from his ex-wife Kate Gosselin. Hailey says that during his brutal divorce, Jon threatened to call Child Protective Services on Kate unless she paid him a huge sum of money and Hailey says she has Jon's handwritten notes to prove it. Hailey says Jon always refers to himself in the third person, which explains why one note says, "Jon giving Kate ultimatums. He privately extorts Kate. If you don't do what I want, I'll do this…" He also writes, "24/48 hours or I'll go to the DA." Hailey says Jon threatened to tell authorities that Kate hurt daughter Mady's arm by yanking on it. "Kate started screaming and Jon just started laughing," said Hailey. "He just laughed at her. Later when he got off the phone I asked him, 'What are you doing? Why are you doing this? This is the mother of your eight children!' And he told me, 'Oh, you don't know what I went through with her, what I had to deal with.'" Jon took to Twitter to deny the claims, writing, "Radaronline has been duped again by Hailey Glassman, who is apparently without a job and desperate for money. Talk about great news…it appears that the public will not be subjected to the Heidi Montag sex tape. TMZ reports that Heidi and estranged hubby Spencer Pratt have cut off their negotiations to sell the tape to Vivid Entertainment. "Heidi's made it very clear that she is not interested in releasing any tapes," read a letter from Spencer's rep to Vivid honcho Steven Hirsch. "It looks like she pulled the kill switch." The letter also stated that "Spencer's not interested in further destroying their relationship by pursuing an avenue she's so vehemently against."

According to Paris Hilton’s hairstylist, Paris is too busy to do drugs. Busy doing what, is the next logical question. Michael Boychuck told RadarOnline that Paris “wants everyone to know she does not do drugs and does not have time for that.” He said he’s been texting back and forth with Paris since she was arrested on cocaine charges last Friday. “She expressed to me that her career is very important and she would never do drugs or anything else for that matter to destroy what she's worked so hard for,” he said. He also said that he’s known Paris for 18 years and he’s never seen her do drugs. Boychuck said he’s confident the “bogus” charges against her will be dropped.

 

 

 

 

 

 

PARIS HIDES DRUGS IN UNLIKELY PLACE?

NOTE CONTENT: In stark contrast to her hairdresser’s defense, another report surfaced yesterday about Paris Hilton and her drug habit. According to a source, Paris notoriously hides her drug stash in her vagina. Apparently, that’s why she asked cops to use the bathroom after being pulled over in Vegas. “She knew it would be her only chance to hide the cocaine and avoid arrest,” the source said. “Paris is not as dumb as she seems.” The 29-year-old heiress also allegedly performs her smuggling act when traveling through airport security. She packs the cocaine inside a lubricated condom before inserting it in her private parts. We all know it’s not the first foreign object she’s had up there! Too crude?

 

 

 

 

 

Now that his divorce is finalized, Tiger Woods has moved into a brand new bachelor pad in New York City. A source told UsMagazine.com that the golf pro officially moved into the downtown apartment over the weekend and was “introducing himself as the new neighbor.” After his numerous extramarital affairs were made public last year, Woods split from wife Elin Nordegren. Their divorce was finalized last Monday. Nordegren – with whom Woods has two children – will split her time between the family’s Orlando-area home and her native Sweden.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bristol Palin, former Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter, spoke to UsWeekly Monday night about her decision to join the new season of Dancing with the Stars. "I just wanted to do it because it's so fun," the 19-year-old single mom said. "It's positive and it's a good competition. I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and have a good time." She said the most challenging thing for her will be showing her personality and moving her hips. Just don’t expect her to wear those revealing costumes. “I know that mine will be the most conservative -- I will be the most dressed. That's how I am and that's how I want to dress,” she said.  Bristol also said her mom is completely supportive of her decision to participate in the show.

Roger Clemens entered a “not guilty” plea in U.S. District Court Monday to charges that he lied to Congress.  The 7-time Cy Young Award winner testified in 2008 that he had never used HGH or steroids to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.  But his former trainer Brian McNamee testified in the Mitchell Report that he had injected Clemens with the substances dozens of times, and turned over syringes and other physical evidence.  Clemens has been charged with two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements, and one count of obstruction of Congress.  He could face up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine if he’s found guilty of all charges.  The trial has a tentative start date of April 5th.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Paris Hilton was charged with felony cocaine possession yesterday, following her Friday arrest in Las Vegas. During a traffic stop, cops spotted a baggy of white powder fall from her purse. The bag turned out to contain .8 grams of cocaine. Cigarette wrappers commonly used for marijuana and a broken tablet of the drug Albuterol were also found in Paris’ purse. The 29-year-old heiress has been claiming that the purse was not, in fact, her own. The drug charge carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison if convicted.
 
Meanwhile, Paris’ boyfriend Cy Waits, who was driving the car at the time, was also arrested for a DUI. The 34-year-old was fired from his job as head of nightclub operations for Wynn and Encore properties shortly after the bust. "Wynn has a zero-tolerance policy with their club execs when it comes to brushes with the law," a source told E!.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The brand new Dancing with the Stars cast has been revealed, and as usual, it’s an eclectic bunch. The 12 participants include: Jersey Shore’s Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, Bristol Palin, David Hasselhoff, Florence Henderson of The Brady Bunch fame, singer Michael Bolton, The Hills’ star Audrina Patridge, comedienne Margaret Cho, Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer Grey, singer Brandy, actor Kyle Massey, retired basketball player Rick Fox and retired NFL quarterback Kurt Warner. Their professional dance partners won’t be announced until tomorrow. Dancing with the Stars premieres September 20th on ABC.

 

 

 

 

 

 

It seems that after his very public split with Sandra Bullock, the cheating Jesse James is indeed moving on with tattoo artist Kat Von D. The two were spotted hanging together in Austin, Texas over the weekend. Kat flew to meet Jesse on Friday night and the couple’s weekend included a trip to a World War II museum in Fredricksburg. Witnesses saw the two holding hands while walking down the street towards the museum. “It’s a quaint but busy little tourist town,” one source said. “They didn’t go unnoticed.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

While Jesse James has been out gallivanting with Kat Von D, Sandra Bullock has been busy with adopted baby Louis. During a Today show interview set to air today, the 46-year-old actress says she believes everything in her life has happened for a reason – including times of hardship. She spoke about the “long, long process” of adopting the now 7-month-old and says she feels Louis “was always mine.” She calls her son her “little Cajun cookie.” Bullock spoke with Matt Lauer while in Louis’ hometown of New Orleans.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jason Sudeikis’ joke on Lopez Tonight may have backfired. The SNL funnyman, who is dating Mad Men’s January Jones, was asked by George Lopez last week if he had seen her "naked and everything." Sudeikis first said, "I don't want to get into it." Then added, "I'm kidding. I do want to get into it! I do, and I have!" Jones fired back Sunday night at the Emmy’s, telling People, “He's never seen me naked, nor will he after those comments.” But then she admitted that he handled Lopez’s question well. "He made a joke of it. What was he supposed to say?" she said.

 

 

 

 

 

Snooki’s boyfriend decided to pop the question in an unconventional way. Ex-Iraq veteran Jeff Miranda proposed to the overly-tanned Jersey Shore star on the cover of a magazine. He is featured on the cover of the September 10 issue of Steppin’ Out Magazine along with the headline “Will you marry me?” In excerpts from the interview obtained by RadarOnline, Miranda talks about wanting to spend the rest of his life with Snooki, and possibly even having children together! “If we got married we would be the best parents around,” he said. He admits that Snooki will be shocked by the cover, but he’s confident she’ll say “yes.” No word on how he feels about RadarOnline spilling the beans early.
Meanwhile, the entire Jersey Shore cast is being sued for assault by a woman who claims their bodyguards attacked her. The alleged incident occurred back in September when the woman got into an altercation with Snooki.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Head and Shoulders Shampoo has taken out a million-dollar insurance policy on Troy Polamalu's hair. The Pittsburgh Steelers safety, known for his long curly hair, has been a spokesperson for the brand for more than a year, and the company took out the policy with Lloyd's of London to protect their investment. Polamalu says he hasn't cut his hair in over seven years. He's been tackled by the hair at least once; we're not sure if that's covered.

Paris Hilton was arrested in Las Vegas Friday on charges of cocaine possession. Cops in Vegas pulled over the car Paris was riding in after seeing a cloud of marijuana smoke wafting from the windows. The vehicle was being driven by her 29-year-old boyfriend Cy Waits, who was arrested for driving under the influence.  Officers searched Paris (apparently not at the scene, but later at the Wynn hotel, where they took her to “keep her safe”), and they found a small amount of cocaine in her purse.  Sources say Paris insists the bag was not hers. She’s claiming that before she went out, she decided her bag didn’t match her outfit and borrowed a friend’s instead, so the coke belonged to them.  Paris was released early Saturday morning.  She immediately hired powerful Vegas lawyer David Chesnoff to handle her case.  Sources say he plans to go to court Monday to argue that there is no basis to charge Paris because the amount of cocaine was “negligible,” the purse wasn’t hers and Paris “was illegally searched.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Situation may have a little trouble Dancing with the Stars. Sources say scheduling conflicts with the last days of Jersey Shore tapings could give him significantly less time to practice for the show. TMZ reports that the DWTS contestants will begin rehearsing today, but Jersey Shore is scheduled to tape until at least September 8th. ABC officially announces the DWTS cast tonight. The show is set to premiere on September 20th. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

George Michael is finally seeking help for his drug problem. Just last week, the Wham singer pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. He was arrested in July after he drove his car into a London store. He was high on marijuana at the time and is facing prison time. Over the weekend, Michael revealed that after the incident, he checked himself into a 14-day detox program, and is now receiving outpatient treatment including drug counseling “several times a week.  “I want to thank you all sincerely, and also to reassure those of you who worry so much for me. I fully appreciate the seriousness of my current situation, for which I truly apologize,” said George in a statement. “Personal problems which I had tried to deal with myself had clearly got the better of me, and I am sorry that my pride has prevented me from seeking help before now.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When Bristol Palin dumped Levi Johnston for the second time she said it was because all he wanted to do was be famous. Well, Levi is saying the same thing about his ex-fiancée, who is expected to compete on Dancing with the Stars this season. "I don't think I'm any more obsessed with making a career out of this than she is," he told The Early Show.  "I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with [fame.] I'm just taking the opportunities as they come."  Levi also told the morning show that he regrets issuing an apology to the Palin family during his second engagement to Bristol. He said he did it because "that was something I did to make my fiancée happy," but he now says that the apology "makes me sound like a liar." Levi will next star in a reality show that will follow his attempt to become mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and he seems to think he has a shot at winning. He says, "I really don't think the mayor's about qualifications, but people liking you and believing in you."

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lindsay Lohan is looking to get both her life and career back on track. The New York Post reports that she recently hired Britney Spears' business manager Lou Taylor to help get her finances straightened out. Word is, Lindsay is also interested in hiring Spears' manager Larry Rudolph. For now, Lindsay is looking for ways to make money, but she is smart enough to have turned down offers of up to $150,000 to host parties at clubs and casinos. Said one source, "Lindsay knows she has to stay home and behave, she knows one wrong move could land her back in jail."

 

 

 

 

 

 

After yet another disappointing performance at the box office with The Switch, Jennifer Aniston is looking to shake up her movie career. According to Hollywoodlife.com, the former Friends star plans to get a bit naughty for her new role in the film Wanderlust, which will feature her first-ever topless scene.  In the film, her character, described as a "free loving" married woman who moves to a hippie commune, indulges in threesomes with two other women, sleeps around with numerous men and takes drugs.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Heidi Montag continues to insist there isn't a sex tape for Spencer Pratt to sell, but her alleged girl-on-girl partner says differently. Playboy Playmate Karissa Shannon admitted during a radio interview that a tape exists and claims that Spencer stole it from her. "There is a sex tape of me and Heidi. It's just me and Heidi, that's it," said Karissa. "Me and Heidi were hanging out at her house in Malibu and he came over to pick up some stuff and he 'accidentally' took my camera." Apparently Karissa is worried about what else may be on that tape. "Spencer had no right to steal my camera," she says. "There are other things on there that I don't want to come out, including the video of me and Heidi."
